Read the code. See the equations.
The same Markdown, as source and as a reading view.
```typescript
const reader = {
local: true,
readOnly: true,
theme: "light",
};
```
$$\bar{x}=\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=1}^{n}x_i,\qquad
\sigma^2=\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=1}^{n}(x_i-\bar{x})^2$$

Getting started
Choose a file. Or a folder.
Desktop Chrome or Edge recommended. Availability depends on browser and system permissions.
First time here?
Open the reader over HTTPS and choose a local Markdown file or image. Grant access to a specific document folder for local images and links. Installation guidance is in Settings. Wait for “Ready to launch offline” before disconnecting.
Why can’t I open a folder?
Browsers restrict some drive roots and system directories. Choose a specific ordinary document folder; the app cannot bypass these restrictions. Wiki-link indexing has scan budgets. For large folders, choose a smaller scope or use explicit relative paths.
Supported files and current limits
Supports .md, .markdown, PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP and SVG. Not a complete Obsidian replacement: note transclusion, block references, standalone PDF and HTML are not supported. Bookmarks, full-text search, multiple workspaces, HTML export and a complete extension are not finished. OS file association still needs cross-platform validation.
Are my files uploaded?
Document content is not uploaded and usage telemetry is not sent by default. The reader accesses local files read-only. This site uses no analytics, remote fonts, payment SDKs or embedded forms. Third-party services open only when you follow their feedback or support links.
Can I use it offline?
The first visit requires a connection. Wait for the reader to report “Ready to launch offline” before disconnecting. It can then launch offline and read authorized local files. Clearing caches, storage eviction or expired file permissions may require another online setup or authorization. Permanent offline availability is not guaranteed.
What changes if I contribute?
Currently available reading features are free. Contributions are entirely voluntary: no extra features, license delivery, future entitlements or priority support. Third-party payments are governed by platform rules and applicable laws.
Does it replace Obsidian or a Markdown editor?
No. MDView focuses on read-only viewing, with basic Obsidian wiki links and image references. It does not provide editing, a plugin ecosystem, note transclusion or block references. Grant access to the relevant document folder for local images and links.
